Two of the founders of Vorticism are depicted in this painting. On the left Ezra Pound is reclining stiffly in an easy chair whilst Wyndham Lewis is contorting himself in a pyrotechnic display of Vorticist righteousness. In the centre is the first issue of Blast – the shocking pink coloured manifesto of the movement that they had co-founded to bring cubism and futurism to England, with a British twist.A third figure, that of Gaudier Brzeska, was to have been included like a child or one of his own totemic carvings, rising in between the other two, but was painted out in favour of the book instead. He may yet though make a reappearance.
