Arthur’s Restaurant (oil on canvas 1976) – Smithfield Market is the main meat market for London and is most active throughout the night when the dead animals are unloaded from lorries by meat porters in blood smeared white overalls and caps. Four such burly men are depicted here reading a newspaper, smoking and drinking tea. Their crude gestures and rough banter belie a gentler side as displayed to the waitresses, who in turn treat them with maternal affection. To the side, observing all, sits the artist sketching the scene.
Studio exhibition open to the public
Paul Houlton’s work is displayed in his stupendous studio, a former chapel, just off Hove seafront and covers a wide range of interests in fifty paintings, drawings and original prints. Vorticism, Picasso, Japanese and 20th century British art feature prominently in this kaleidoscope of art from the 1960s to the present. This is primarily a viewing exhibition although a small number of limited edition original prints can be purchased along with affordable fine art prints and greeting cards.
